Bioluminescence! The car is pulling up now, we're reaching for our jackets And we could see this from a satellite The pulsing and the swirling, it's something quite like magic The icy and fluorescing fireflies beneath my feet and... And everything is clear, I want to take you here It's something to behold, the crystal and the cold It's fading and then through, and all that's left is you Recalling the fleeting foxfire The day brings tide of warning, the fireworks are foreshadowed Our torchlight slices through the darkened night The salty meets the sweetness, the indigo meets the sapphire A tiny universe of galaxies beneath my feet and... And everything is clear, I want to take you here It's something to behold, the crystal and the cold It's fading and then through, and all that's left is you Recalling the fleeting foxfire Bioluminescence! Bioluminescence! Bioluminescence!

River 03:42
RIVER Would you like to jump into the River with me? Would you like to jump into the River with me? We can swim until me make it, and try until the fake it, in the river with me Would you like to jump into the River with me? Would you like to, swim across the River with me? Would you like to, swim across the River with me? As it ebbs and as it flows oh baby that's just how it goes in the RIver with me? Would you like to, swim across the River with me? And as it's undulating and as it's getting late and the moon begins ascending, in the RIver with me Here in the River with me And nothing is decided, just you and I collided we'll never be divided, in the river with me Jump into the River, jump into the river with me Would you like to Dance beside with River with me? Would you like to Dance beside with River with me? We can feel our bodies shaking, feel our body quaking in the River with me? Would you like to Dance beside with River with me? And as it's undulating and as it's getting late and the moon begins ascending, in the RIver with me Here in the River with me And nothing is decided, just you and I collided we'll never be divided, in the river with me Jump into the River, jump into the river with me We're gonna make it, oh we're gonna make it oh We're gonna make it, you and I will make it oh.

Isolation 03:59
Isolation I don't know what day it is today, It could be tomorrow or it could be yesterday There's a bounty in my shopping cart, but I wont even buy one no I wont even buy one I'm gonna take up baking, I've never been that good at it before I need another cup of sugar, I can't even go next-door no I can't go next-door Meet me by the fence we'll have another cup of tea and that'll turn to wine and then that'll turn to three and we will all slow down it's an isolated incident this isolation incident Walk on by, walk on by, walk on by, walk on by... Planted the seedling watch them grow, and fixed the faulty latch on the gate My puzzle box said it has a thousand pieces, but I'm almost at the end there's 998 I'm gonng take up painting, I don't know the first thing about paint it ended up being an inkblot... diagnose that! I think I'm gonna faint Meet me by the fence we'll have another cup of tea and that'll turn to wine and then that'll turn to three and we will all slow down it's an isolated incident this isolation incident Walk on by, walk on by, walk on by, walk on by... All of us together alone, All of us together alone...

Summer 03:31
Summer Taking off as fast as their feet would go, hills are giving way to the greyer tones Northern lights and all the bigger brighter giants and just calling them out and calling them on The buzz will hypnotise them, billboard and takeaway and parking spaces the thrill will mesmerise enough to draw them all out and draw them all on They always come back like a moth to the light They always come back for the taste and the sight Because they like it in the sun and there's beaches in the summer there's something in the water where you figure it out They always, yeah they always Head are down the blinders are tightly fixed, forming queues and paying to cross the bridge They are spoilt for all their choices and it's calling them on and calling them out Something is making the needle shake, and it flickers and shakes and quakes and quiver quivers calling me in familiar directions and its calling me on and calling me out They always come back like a moth to the light They always come back for the taste and the sight Because they like it in the sun and there's beaches in the summer there's something in the water where you figure it out They always, yeah they always It's calling them on , calling them out, it's calling them on calling calling them out It's drawing them on, drawing them out it's drawing them on it's drawing drawing them out It's calling me on, calling me out, calling me on it's calling calling me out It's drawing me on, drawing me out, drawing me on drawing drawing me out They always come back like a moth to the light They always come back for the taste and the sight Because they like it in the sun and there's beaches in the summer there's something in the water where you figure it out They always, yeah they always It's calling them on , calling them out, it's calling them on calling calling them out It's drawing them on, drawing them out it's drawing them on it's drawing drawing them out It's calling me on, calling me out, calling me on it's calling calling me out It's drawing me on, drawing me out, drawing me on it's drawing drawing me out

Rain 03:05
Rain There's brown all around as we crunch through the paddocks The dust is in our eyes and smudges up our glasses Try as we might to be the ever reaching optimists, the poor little dog had none And we gaze to the skies, where are the butterflies? Prayed for the Rain but the rain didn't come, prayed for the rain but the rain didn't come... And then came the lightening, a single strike of lightening it fuelled and fed and grew and stole, the monster it was frightening We tried to fight the facts but it was back ancient faxes stacking roof racks packing boxes in our cars. Have a happy new year, there's ash floating in my champagne Prayed for the Rain but the rain didn't come, prayed for the rain but the rain didn't come... Tune up the wireless, black summer it is tireless there's read and yellow, orange, grey but where it the all the blue the trees are blackened skeletons, they're standing at attention as the smoulder and topple over in the ash And on Christmas day the truck still came and the children all opened their gifts I stood in the cul-de-sac, 40 degrees And swallowed a lump in my throat Prayed for the Rain but the rain didn't come, prayed for the rain but the rain didn't come...

about

Hearthstone is a musical time capsule– an anthology of songs reflecting the people and landscapes of the Shoalhaven during 2020-2022. Join Annaliese Szota on a journey as she perfectly blends her engaging theatricality with a quirky indie-pop style and an endearing brand of storytelling.

In 2020/2021, Annaliese was awarded a 'Sense of Place' grant from the Shoalhaven Arts Board to create Hearthstone. She was inspired by the ethereal Bioluminescence in Jervis Bay, the winding Shoalhaven River, living in regional Australia during Covid19 isolation, the irresistible draw of our beaches and landscapes, and the devastation of the Black Summer Currowan bushfires.

Recorded at Sounds Delicious studios in Nowra and with collaboration from local photographers, musicians, graphic designers and artists, Hearthstone is a celebration of Home, and of our sense of place.

This project was made possible with funding from the Shoalhaven Arts Board ‘Sense of Place’ grant.
