There's brown all around as we crunch through the paddocks

The dust is in our eyes and smudges up our glasses

Try as we might to be the ever reaching optimists, the poor little dog had none

And we gaze to the skies, where are the butterflies?

And then came the lightening, a single strike of lightening

it fuelled and fed and grew and stole, the monster it was frightening

We tried to fight the facts but it was back ancient faxes

stacking roof racks packing boxes in our cars.

Have a happy new year, there's ash floating in my champagne

Tune up the wireless, black summer it is tireless

there's read and yellow, orange, grey but where it the all the blue

the trees are blackened skeletons, they're standing at attention

as the smoulder and topple over in the ash

And on Christmas day the truck still came

and the children all opened their gifts
